Annular or total eclipse?

In general, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. By doing this, a shadow is cast on the Earth that partially or completely blocks the Sun's light in certain regions. There are three types of eclipse: total, annular and partial.

Total Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, while completely blocking the face of the Sun. As the surface of the Sun is blocked, you can see its outer atmosphere called the corona . The period of time in which the Sun's light is completely obscured is called totality . The total eclipse will be seen from Earth for people who are in the center of the shadow cast by the Moon on Earth, that is, who are within the path of totality .

Mexico will be able to see the next total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Click here to learn more about this event.

What to expect?

If you are within the path of totality, you will see the sky darken as if it were dusk. You will also be able to observe the solar corona during the time of totality.

Security

It is very important that you use specialized protection during a total eclipse. If you are within the path of totality, you will only be able to remove your eye protection during totality. In any other phase of the eclipse, you should wear eye protection. If you are outside the path of totality and will see the partial eclipse, you should protect your eyes at all times.

Annular Solar Eclipse

An annular solar eclipse is very similar to a total solar eclipse. The difference is that in an annular eclipse, the Moon does not completely block the surface of the Sun, creating a " ring of fire " effect. The reason why this happens is that the Moon is at a point further away from the Earth, therefore it does not completely cover the Sun. The period of time in which the "ring of fire" can be seen is called annularity . The annular eclipse will be seen by those who are in the center of the shadow cast by the Moon on Earth, this region is known as the annular path .

Mexico will be able to see the next annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023. Click here to learn more about this event.

What to expect?

If you are within the path of the annularity, you will see the Moon covering the Sun but leaving a ring around it giving the "ring of fire" effect. The sky will darken, although not to the same magnitude compared to a total eclipse.

Security

Because the Sun is never completely covered by the Moon, it is essential that you use specialized protection during all phases of the annular eclipse. This instruction is also mandatory if you are not on the path of annularity and would see the eclipse partially.

Partial Solar Eclipse

A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and only covers part of the Sun. People who are outside the path of totality (or annularity depending on what eclipse it is) will be able to see a partial eclipse.

What to expect?

The Moon will partially cover the surface of the Sun. Depending on how much it is covered, you will be able to observe a darkening of the sky as if it were a sunset.

Security

Because the Sun is never completely covered by the Moon, it is essential that you use specialized protection during all phases of the partial eclipse.
